Mutations

ID #1248

I have written down 'oncogenes' next to the mismatch repair slide on page 5 of lecture 24. I can't remember why I have this here. What are oncogenes and how do they apply to mismatch repair?

It was just an aside. The point I was making was that some cancers are caused by the loss of the mismatch repair system. If you can't fix your mistakes, you might (and sometimes do) end up mutating a gene known to cause cancer in a mutated form. These are called oncogenes.
