Mutations

ID #2433

What is the difference between a transition and a transversion in base pair substitution mutations?

A transition is a mutation that changes a purine to a different purine or a pyrimidine to a different pyrimidine (e.g. adenine to guanine). A transversion changes a purine to a pyrimidine or vice versa (e.g. adenine to cytosine).
