Is excision repair not the same thing as the mismatch repair? If not, how do they differ?

No, mismatch repair is different from excision repair. Although the processes are somewhat similar, the proteins involved are different (MutH, MutL, MutS)versus UvrA, UvrB, and UvrC. Excision repair is mostly involved in repairing DNA damage due to external causes, like UV light, while mismatch repair fixes errors in replication. The textbook briefly explains the process of excision repair. Prof. Mehrtens gave a detailed explanation of mismatch repair in Lecture 23, so you should review the process as well as understand how the mismatch repair enzymes distinguish between template and daughter strand.
