Mutations

ID #2011

For the question "Mutations are: Correct: heritable changes in the sequence of DNA bases"; why was "Incorrect: heritable changes in the sequence of DNA bases that produce an observable phenotype" incorrect? I thought mutations such as missense mutations have the ability to make a protein inactive resulting in something like sickle cell anemia.

The reason the "extended" version of that statement is incorrect is that not all mutations produce an observable phenotype. As we learned in greater detail in today's lecture, a same sense mutation is indeed a mutation (change in the DNA sequence), but produces no observable change in phenotype.
