The Nucleus and its Functional Domains

ID #2421

When we learned about the dense fibrillar region and the fibrillar region, I'm guessing that the "dense" part is referring to packing density, not gene density, right?

The "dense" part of the dense fibrillar region is due to it appearing very dark on an electron micrograph. The dense fibrillar region has many molecules packed in it (e.g. transcription factors, ribosomal proteins, snoRNPS, etc.) so it stains very darkly. "Dense" in this case is different than gene-dense or heterochromatin (packing)-dense.
