I don't quite understand the purpose of translation initiation factors and GDP in the initiation of translation. In one of the slides from Lecture 19, it just shows the initiation factors and GDP as being present, but then they immediately leave. What role do they serve?

Good question! The translation initiation factors help to properly position the mRNA, small ribosomal subunit and the f-Met-charged tRNA properly. The GTP hydrolysis (to GDP) is necessary to release the initiation factor from the complex. After that, the large subunit can bind and translation can proceed.
