What does it mean when we refer to tRNAs as "adapter molecules?"

An adapter is a tool that allow two items with incompatible connections to be used together. If you've ever tried using full size headphones with an iPod, you probably needed something that allowed the 1/4" plug on your headphones to fit in the 1/8" input in your iPod -- that's an example of an adapter.
