Transcription and RNA Processing

ID #1182

I'm confused on TATA boxes. It makes sense that DNA can denature more easily because of the double bonds instead of triple bonds, but I thought RNA Polymerase doesn't unwind the promoter, rather it unwinds the DNA after the +1 base.

The unwinding has to start somewhere, even though you don't want transcription itself to start until the +1 base. That "somewhere" is typically in a TATA box of some sort.
