Transcription and RNA Processing

ID #2045

Why would treatment with an RNase (a ribonuclease, or RNA degrading enzyme) most likely disrupt the activity of peptidyl transferase?

Peptidyl transferase is the enzymatic activity within a ribosome that catalyzes peptide bond formation. Specifically, the enzymatic activity comes from the RNA part, making it a ribozyme. If you treat this enzyme with an enzyme that degrades RNA, you're removing the very part that carries out the reaction, leading to a non-functional molecule.
