Science 322:1650-1655 (About as close a direct test as you'll find of Green's model of mechanical stress mediating phyllotaxy. Evident suggests it doesn't, but their data and modeling strongly support a central role for microtubules and the cellulose reinforcement they direct, in governing morphogenesis at the shoot apex. This quote from the paper is a keeper: "...plant tissues seem to react to mechanical forces as solids, whereas animal tissues react as fluids.")
