Plant Anatomy

Parenchyma & Collenchyma

Objectives:

  1. Identify the structural and functional similarities and differences between parenchyma and collenchyma cells.

  2. Know the “ideal” shape of a parenchyma cell in mass.

  3. Identify the four major types of collenchyma.

  4. Relate the composition of collenchyma cell walls.

  5. Determine how maceration enables one to better study cell morphology.

  6. Determine the differences in appearance of collenchyma cell walls as viewed in fresh and fixed specimens for light microscopy, and the view as seen with electron microscopy (see CD).

  7. Know the origin of collenchyma cells and their ability to transform.
