Integrative Biology 335 — Course Information


Catalog Description:
Integrative Biology 335 introduces the principles and methods of identifying, naming and classifying flowering plants. It includes a survey of selected flowering plant families and provides information on their relationships. The course meets three times a week for lecture and once a week for a two-hour lab.

Prerequisites:
Integrative Biology 102; or Integrative Biology 103; or Integrative Biology 100 or 101; or Integrative Biology 150; or consent of the instructor.

Lectures:
9:00-9:50 AM; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
In Spring 2010, all lectures will be held in room TBA.

Labs:
Tuesday 1:00-2:50 PM (Section AB2);
Tuesday 3:00-4:50 PM (Section AB3).

In Spring 2010, all labs will meet in Room 326 Natural History Building

The coursepak "Systematics of Plants, Class Notes & Laboratory Exercises" for IB 335 can be purchased at TIS Bookstore. REQUIRED. Bring this coursepak with you to both lecture and lab.

In particular, access the "Lecture Syllabus" before each class, print off the relevant notes and bring them to lecture. These pages are updated just prior to their use, so don't print these pages too far ahead of time!

Digital Flowers:
This courseware was developed specifically for Integrative Biology 335. You will use this program for both lecture and lab material, and you will use it while studying for exams. Click here to access Digital Flowers.

Supplies:
Drawing pencils, drawing paper, and an eraser and a small ruler are required for the laboratory. Your own set of dissecting tools would help tremendously too (and are probably of better quality than ours).

Attendance:
It is assumed that you will attend every lecture and lab, and you are responsible for the material covered in them. Based on past experience, students will miss 5–10 points on exams for every lecture missed. To achieve an A grade, you must attend lecture regularly. If you know that you will be missing a lecture, see us ahead of time so that we can inform you what will be happening that day. It is nearly impossible to make up a lab. If you know that you will be missing a lab, see your lab instructor — it may be possible for you to attend another lab section that same day.

Grades:

Your teaching assistant will discuss the grading scheme for the laboratory grade. You will be graded on your laboratory drawings, weekly quizzes, and attendance/participation.

Conflicts:
Make up lecture and laboratory exams are generally NOT given except under exceptional circumstances, such as the death of an immediate family member, a serious illness, religious beliefs, and formal participation in officially sanctioned UIUC activities. If you have a conflict with any scheduled lecture or laboratory exam this semester (including the finals!), contact Prof. Downie immediately. University policy gives you a week from the beginning of the semester to do this.

Cheating and Plagiarism:
Do not copy from others! On the quizzes and assignments that you will receive this semester, we state explicitly that your final (written or drawn) responses must be an individual effort and anything to the contrary is a major infraction of academic integrity. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated! The penalties are severe and may include expulsion from the university! At the very least you will get a failing grade for the course and a written notice in your university file. For more information, see the Code of Policies and Regulations Applying to All Students and be aware that "Ignorance of [this] rule is never a defense."
