Integrative Biology 335: Systematics of Plants

In Commemoration of Presidents' Day

Plants Named After Presidents
(or, maybe in some cases, Presidents Named After Plants!)

These were definitely named after Presidents:
Washingtonia (Arecaceae) for George Washington
Jeffersonia (Podophyllaceae) for Thomas Jefferson

These sound like they were named after Presidents (but weren't):
Linconia (Bruniaceae) for Abraham Lincoln
Johnsonia (Liliaceae) for Andrew Johnson
Jacksonia (Fabaceae) for Andrew Jackson
Wilsonia (Convolvulaceae) for Woodrow Wilson
Rooseveltia (Arecaceae) for Theodore Roosevelt? Franklin D. Roosevelt?
Kennedia (Fabaceae; named after the Kennedy family)
Fordia (Fabaceae) for Gerald Ford
harding grass (Phalaris) for Warren Harding
johnson grass (Poaceae) for Andrew Johnson

But what about these?
Clintonia (Liliaceae) for Bill Clinton
Hilleria (Phytolaccaceae) for Hillary Clinton. Since a name already exists, she's a shoo-in to become one of our next presidents!
Kerria (Rosaceae) for John Kerry. This plant is a suckering shrub and is usually doubly-flowered
Edwardsia (Fabaceae) for John Edward. An hallucinogenic plant that is fatal in excess.
bush (a thick branched, low-growing, woody shrub)

...no doubt, there's more! Send us names!
