General Exam Study Tips

Exam Policies

All exams will be in a multiple-choice and/or short answer format. Non-programmable calculators will be allowed at exams.

  • Six midterm exams will be given in lecture. Your lowest exam score will be dropped if you take all six exams. Further details concerning each exam will be posted on this webpage.
  • Exam format: Exams will be multiple choice.
  • Exam content: The exams will cover material from lectures, discussion sections and homework assignments.
  • Items to bring to each exam: Your UIUC photo ID, several sharp #2 pencils, an eraser and a non-programmable calculator. Any backpacks, books, notes etc. that you bring to the exam room must be placed at the front of the room during the exam. TA’s and other exam proctors are not responsible for security of belongings placed at front of the room during the exam.
  • Items NOT to bring to exams: Cell phones are prohibited and will be confiscated if brought to the exam. Using a cell phone during the exam will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Contuct, and will result in a score of zero for that exam at the minimum.
  • Students who need to take exams at DRES should notify the center as soon as possible so that they can make the best possible arrangements. We are very happy to work with the Rehab Center to assist you, but it is the student's responsibility to initiate such arrangements.
  • If you have a UIUC course or activity those conflicts with the exam, email Tracey Hickox (hickox@life.illinois.edu) by 5 PM the Friday of the week prior to the exam to request a conflict exam. See Conflict Exam Instructions for further details.
  • Exam Absence: If you are ill or incapacitated on the day of an exam, seek medical assistance at McKinley Health Center or elsewhere as needed. If possible, call or email your TA and Tracey Hickox to advise them of your situation. If you miss an exam for any reason (including enrolling in the class late), your missing exam score will count as your one allowed dropped exam score out of the six midterms.
  • Make-up exams are NOT given during the semester. If you miss more than one exam, you will need to contact Tracey Hickox to discuss your options.

IMPORTANT: Students can only miss one exam a semester whether excused or not.  If you miss more than one exam, contact Tracey Hickox ASAP to discuss your options.

Questions and corrections to midterm exam grades

  • Keys to each of the midterm exams will be posted on the course web site shortly after the exam. Students are encouraged to mark their answers on their exam sheets and then use the key to calculate their grades.
  • Exam grades will be entered into the grade book by the week following the exam.  An error sheet for each student will be provided in discussion the week following the exam.
  • Students with questions about the grading of particular questions have until the end of week following the exam to contact Tracey Hickox (by email - hickox@life.uiuc.edu) explaining why they think a question an alternative answer is more correct, or at least equally correct as the posted answer.  No challenges will be allowed at any later point in time.
  • Students who believe that the scantron machine has graded their exam incorrectly have one week to contact Tracey Hickox following the discussion period in which error sheets are distributed to your section.  She will manually regrade your scantron.  Please include the form (A, B, or C) of the exam in your email.  No regrades will be done if the request is made at any later point in time.

 Conflict Exams

  • In most cases, you should not need to sign up for a conflict exam since hour exams are given during the lecture hour.  If you still need to arrange for a conflict exam, please send a brief email to Tracey Hickox (hickox@life.illinois.edu) explaining your situation.  Put IB 150 CONFLICT in the subject line of your message to ensure that your email is read in a timely fashion. You must make a separate request for each exam.
  • You will be emailed permission to take the Conflict Exam, if permission is granted. This email will contain the location of the exam.
  • Your UIUC photo ID and written evidence of the conflict are required to be admitted to the conflict exam room. If you are not on the conflict list, no exam will be ready for you. Conflict exams for midterms only will typically be given at 4 PM on the same day as the scheduled exams. Conflict exams will be similar but not necessarily identical to scheduled exams.
  • The Conflict Exam is often not the same as the regularly scheduled exam, but it may be similar. You will therefore not be permitted to take your exam with you when you leave the exam. Your exam will be given to your TA to return you at the next meeting of your Discussion Section.
  • Most conflicts that are permitted are for a regularly scheduled course being taken for credit at UIUC. Other possible acceptable conflicts include a course taken for credit at Parkland College, employment by the university (we will contact your supervisor), or participation in an official UIUC event, such as an athletic event. Most other reasons (for example, social events) will NOT be acceptable, but we realize that life can be complicated even for dedicated students. Therefore, ALL requests submitted by the deadline will be considered by Tracey Hickox, although it is possible that not all will not be granted.
  • Student athletes should identify themselves via email to Tracey Hickox early in the semester so that we can deal with possible schedule conflicts as soon as possible. We will work with athletes and other students participating in official university events to help you make up missed work, but it is the student's responsibility to initiate such arrangements.

Final Exam

  • The Final Exam will be administered on Tuesday, May 8th, 8-11 AM.
  • The Final Exam will contain more multiple choice questions than the semester exams. It will be cumulative and cover lecture, assigned reading, assigned homework, and discussion section material.
  • In case of illness or personal emergency the day of the final exam, contact a Dean in your college. Only a Dean can excuse a student from a final exam.
  • Requests for a Conflict Final Exam should be made by filling out the Final Exam Conflict Request Form and turning it in to Tracey Hickox. The ONLY reasons for such a request are:
    1. The student has three final exams within a 24 hour period as defined in Section § 3-201.5 of the UIUC Code of Policies and Regulations Applying to All Students.
    2. The student has another final exam scheduled at the same time as the IB 150 Final Exam. The conflicting course's enrollment must be LOWER than the IB 150 enrollment for you to take the IB 150 Conflict Final Exam and must be a Non-Combined course final exam.
    3. The student has a verified personal problem, and has received written permission to take the IB 150 Conflict Final Exam from a Dean in their College.
  • Travel plans or wanting to leave campus early before the last day of scheduled finals are NOT reasons to request a Final Exam Conflict.

Questions and corrections to final exam grades

  • The final exam is a secure exam, so you will not be allowed to view it again after you turn it in.  A key to the exam will not be posted.
  • Students who believe that the scantron machine has graded their exam incorrectly should contact Tracey Hickox.
