Integrative
Biology 103
Tutoring Extra Credit
Project
Each tutoring project is worth 1% extra credit
and can be done as many times as you want but you may earn only up to 6% extra
credit (depending on the completness and quality of the work).
You
must follow all of these directions:
1. Adhere to the Policy of Academic
Integrity in Integrative Biology 103.
2. Contact Beth
Morgan by e-mail on the web and indicate your interest in the project.
3. This project is designed to encourage the interaction of study pairs of tutors
and tutees.
4. A tutor must have earned an A or B on the first exam and have scored at least
2 letter grades above the tutee.
- The tutor and tutee must participate
in a total of at least 2 hours of tutoring spread over two sessions including
an assignment between sessions.
- The tutor and tutee will each
write a report describing the subject matter, activities and techniques used,
assignments given and completed between sessions, and an explanation of
what each learned from the experience (Reports should be equivalent to
at least a single, double-spaced, 12 point typed page.) .
Suggestions for tutorial techniques
and activities: (All techniques and activities should emphasize the ACTIVE participation
of the tutee.)
- NOT AN OPTION - Tutor lecturing
to tutee
- Tutor asking questions to assess
beginning knowledge of tutee.
- Tutee answering subject matter
questions of tutor.
- Tutee asking questions and tutor
helping tutee answerer her/his own questions.
- Tutee and tutor constructing
a diagram, table, or concept map to organize a set of facts, concepts, or
ideas.
- Tutee and tutor constructing
a new model or working through an existing model to understand a concept or
idea.
- Tutee and tutor constructing
an analogy to illustrate a concept or idea.
- Tutee and tutor complete agreed
upon assignment prior to second session.

Suggestions for tutorial outcomes:
- Develop mastery of end-of-lecture
questions in the Lecture Companion.
- Answer questions in the Phytness
Center.
- Develop mastery of objectives
at the beginning of lab in the Lab Manual.

Initiating the project:
- Offer your help as a tutor or
request help from a tutor by talking to classmates or contacting Beth.
- Contact potential partners by
e-mail.
- Tutors and tutees agree to work
together for at least one extra credit project.
- Tutoring pairs may form "off
line", but please post your intention to work together by e-mail to Beth.
One tutor may work with more than one tutee if you wish to earn more credit.
- One or both participants may
request consultation with course staff before, during or after the tutoring
sessions.
Participation and reporting:
- Tutors and tutees arrange meeting
times and places.
- Tutors and tutees write individual
reports and post in the Assignment Posting pages linked to the homepage. If
you do not, no credit will be given.
- Reports should include:
- tutoring schedule and amount
of time of meetings
- subject matter discussed
- tutoring techniques and activities
used
- assignments given and completed
between sessions
- a dialog describing what
each participant learned from the experience (at least one page).
- Post in Turnitin.com.
- Turn in your paper to Beth in
person or by slipping it under her door at 426 NHB.
Credit:
- Tutors and tutees may each earn
up to 1% for each reported pair of tutoring sessions adding up to at least
2 hours of tutoring.
- The project may be repeated for
additional extra credit.
- Tutors may work with more than
one tutee and earn more credit. Separate reports are required for each tutee
with whom you work.
- Extra credit is added at the
end of the semester as percentage points on top of the course grade you have
earned.
