Obtaining Hardware and Software

Software and hardware are available from many sources, often at very different prices. Here are some common items with the best purchasing info we know of. The vendor is UIUC Central Stores unless otherwise noted.

Software

Microsoft Office 2007

For Microsoft Windows XP or Vista.

If you're purchasing on University funds, you can purchase a license through the Microsoft Select licensing program. Then borrow a CD to install from us or purchase your own CD. Individuals can purchase a discounted academic version box set.

Standard Edition includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. If you want Publisher (a page layout program) or Access (a database program) then buy the Pro Plus Edition. Office Enterprise Edition adds InfoPath (an information management application) and Groove (a collaboration application)

For Mac OS X only.

Adobe Products

Adobe products are sold separately and bundled into suites. Common applications are Acrobat, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

Note: Mac OS X includes the ability to create PDF documents which may reduce the need for Acrobat.

Note: Instead of Photoshop, consider using a free, open source image manipulation program, called The GIMP. More info at the GIMP home page or the GIMP on OS X home page.

FileMaker Pro 10.0

Some versions FileMaker Pro use incompatible file formats. If you're buying FileMaker to share data with another person, be sure to get a compatible version. FileMaker Pro 6.0 will share data with FileMaker Pro 5.0 or 5.5. FileMaker 10.0 will share data with FileMaker 7.0, 8.0, 8.5 or 9.0.

The best price for FileMaker 10.0 (Windows or Mac) is via the UIUC Webstore for $125 per license, plus $5 for the CD.

E-mail clients: Thunderbird

Thunderbird is the successor to the e-mail program built into Netscape Navigator & Mozilla. It's full-featured, fast and free. Available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Note: Commercial development of Eudora has ceased. We recommend Thunderbird instead Eudora.

Web Browsers: Mozilla Firefox

To avoid the constant security problems with Internet Explorer for Windows, we recommend using Mozilla Firefox as your primary web browser. Use Internet Explorer only when needed, for instance when connecting to the Windows Update web site or using U of I's administrative program, Banner.

Firefox is the recommended replacement for Mozilla 1.x, Netscape and Internet Explorer.

HTML Editors

Many applications are available to assist in creating and editing HTML documents.
Some recommendations are:
Nvu - the open source successor to Netscape Composer. Available for free for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows.

Macromedia Dreamweaver - Available for Mac OS X and Windows.

MATLAB

Two versions are available: Network and Standalone.

The Network version can be downloaded without cost. It will use a license server on campus, or you can establish a VPN connection to use it from off-campus.

ChemBioDraw

Illinois-UIUC has purchased an Academic Site License through CambridgeSoft, makers of ChemDraw. This means that you are able to download fully functional chemistry or biology software and have access to online databases, via the Illinois-UIUC site license, which has been prepaid by your institution.

SFTP & FTP clients

Windows -
download WinSCP from http://winscp.sourceforge.net/ for free.

Mac -
CyberDuck - a free SFTP & FTP client for Mac OS X is available from http://cyberduck.ch/

Fetch - from http://www.fetchsoftworks.com/. (You'll have to request a free educational license.)

Fugu - another free SFTP/SCP client for Mac OS X is available from http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/

Firefox and Internet Explorer will act as FTP clients given a URL like
ftp://username@host.some.where.edu/path/to/file
Some versions only allow you to download however.

SSH, SFTP and FTP servers

Mac OS X has built-in SSH, SFTP, and FTP servers.

Windows -
It's possible to use Windows built-in FTP server, but this requires IIS, which often has security vulnerabilities discovered. Try one of these instead:
FileZilla Server (free)

The easiest way to install a free SSH/SFTP server on Windows is to use Cygwin.
