The fundamental changes are --

  • We will begin requiring encryption for all connections retrieving mail via the POP & IMAP protocols. This is to ensure your password and the contents of messages are encrypted while being sent across the network to prevent eavesdropping.
  • We will be limiting the functionality of the mail server addresses, 'smtp.life.uiuc.edu' (for sending mail) and 'life.uiuc.edu' (for retrieving mail). E-mail clients should be configured to use 'smtp.life.illinois.edu' and 'life.illinois.edu' instead. We pay a yearly fee for the security certificate for each of these addresses, so we plan to limit the use of the old names to reduce the cost and simplify our environment.
  • There is no change in the use of your e-mail addresses. The older e-mail addresses at 'life.uiuc.edu' and 'uiuc.edu' will continue to function for the foreseeable future. But if you haven't already done so, we encourage you to change the domain in your mail address from 'uiuc' to 'illinois'. You can continue to use either 'life.illinois.edu' or 'illinois.edu' addresses as your From or Reply-to address.

The pros and cons are:

  • mail addressed to 'life.illinois.edu' addresses are transmitted directly to our mail system
  • the 'illinois.edu' addresses are shorter but route mail through the campus mail system
Your netid@illinois.edu address can route mail anywhere you wish. Before switching to an illinois.edu address, please be sure mail is being sent to your account at life.illinois.edu (or elsewhere) via the email field in the campus Electronic Directory Editor.
