Solanaceae

22-Physalis ixocarpa fruits

[FMP-field: image]

The cultivated tomatillo, widely used in green Mexican salsa sauces, comes from Physalis ixocarpa. The connate calyx become inflated and surrounds the berry. The vascular tissue of the calyx is resistant to weathering and forms lovely lacy, skeletonized structures as the soft tissue decays.
