Salicaceae

2-Introduction

[FMP-field: image]

The Salicaceae, willow family, is found in most parts of the world. However, this family is most common in northern, alpine, and arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Many species occur in wet or at least moist habitats, such as wetlands and along streams and rivers.

Usually only two genera are recognized — Salix, willows, and Populus , poplars. Estimates of the number of species range from 300 to 500. The family is clearly monophyletic.
