Photo of the Year 2014

Rodney L. Burton, recipient of 2014 Govindjee and Rajni Govindjee Award for Excellence in Biological Sciences, is in the center; he is wearing the apron of Robert Emerson, and holding a book "The Structural Basis of Biological Energy Generation", a gift from the Govindjees. Rodney is a graduate student of Tony Crofts. On the left is Rajni Govindjee, and on the right is Govindjee (holding the metal housing, which both he and Rajni had used in their research in 1960). In the background is the 1965 Z-scheme of Govindjee, where he had predicted the existence of the reaction center "P680" in Photosystem II.

Ryan Kelly (2014 Robert Emerson Awardee) seems fascinated with the material on the notice board of Govindjee outside his office (669 Morrill Hall); he is examining the 1965 two-pigment scheme of photosynthesis that Govindjee (who had first studied under Robert Emerson, and then under Eugene Rabinowitch) used in teaching at that time; below is the current (2014) Z-scheme poster of photosynthesis by Govindjee and Wilbert Veit.

To learn about the evolution of this scheme, download the chapter by Govindjee and Björn (2012).
