University of Illinois Fish Symposium Goals

At the University of Illinois, we have 16 different PIs (see list below) that study fishes from various biological perspectives ranging from physiology/molecular genetics to evolution/animal behavior to ecology/conservation and systematics.  Unfortunately, we are spread across four different academic units and have four PIs off campus at field stations.  This symposium aims to bring us together to interact with one another and to determine whether there are benefits to be had from increased organization and interaction with one another.

The specific goals of this symposium are the following:

                 - To foster interactions between faculty, post-docs, and students from various labs that work on fish.

                 - To determine the full variety of tools and capabilities in each lab that we are willing to share with one another.

                 - To determine whether there is interest in forming an official Illinois Fish working group to pursue external grants and                   collectively train graduate students.

                 - To determine whether there is interest in holding this symposium on an annual/bi-annual basis.
