Position Title: Academic Hourly – Laboratory Technician

An academic hourly position is available for a laboratory technician to assist in a study examining how Green Infrastructure practices for managing urban stormwater runoff alter the abundance of juvenile and adult mosquitoes associated with stormwater infrastructure. This research project is based in the Brian Allan Lab in the Department of Entomology at the University of Illinois and is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy and Environment at the University of Illinois. The technician will have the opportunity to join a dynamic team of researchers interested in how human-mediated environmental change influences the transmission of vector-borne diseases.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Identification of juvenile and adult mosquito specimens
- Dissection and measurement of adult mosquito wings
- Enter and organize data collected from mosquito sample processing and field monitoring devices
- Supervise undergraduate students assisting with mosquito sample processing
Required and Preferred Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree is required at the time of the start of employment; preferably in a biological area such as ecology or entomology. Previous laboratory or field research experience is required; previous experience with insect identification is preferred. Candidates must possess basic literacy with Microsoft Office software; some knowledge of mosquito ecology and identification is preferred.
Compensation and Duration: Hourly rate of pay will range from $12-$15/hour commensurate with experience. The duration of employment is expected to be approximately 6-9 months.
