By any standard of excellence, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) ranks among the premier research universities in the United States. This reputation is due to its outstanding faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, and also due to the exceptional resources available here to support the pursuit of a broad spectrum of biological and biomedical research. Of note, UIUC's research has played a prominent role in the origins of molecular biology; it has evolved and broadened to include studies of the structures of biological molecules and detailed mechanisms of enzyme action at one extreme, and mechanisms of gene expression and pattern formation during development at the other.
The importance of interdisciplinary study in the life sciences has led to extensive collaborations among our faculty from diverse departments. In fact, the research areas encompassed by modern cellular and molecular biology benefit from such interdisciplinary studies. Included in this Web site are descriptions of the research currently pursued by our training faculty and the relevant graduate programs. We welcome your interest in the Cell & Molecular Biology Training Program and invite you to examine our program and resources by following the links below or in the column to the left.
