Accomplishments and Goals, continued.

4) Almost all participants promised to provide estimates of biomass for the Network Model. Candy and Rachel will be doing a majority of the vegetation surveying on the islands.

5) Everyone was impressed with the breadth of education and outreach that has been planned for the coming year, and ALL Hands expressed an interest in participating.

6) Last, but not least, a ground swell of opinion on the Network Modeling emerged with hopes that a first trial model would be produced by the end of 2002.

For the longer term, thinking a few years ahead, it was evident that "new" mangrove scientists showed increasing interest in broadening this biocomplexity science to other islands, other locations, and other environments (like the ocean). "Seasoned" (I dare not say "Old") mangrovelers were already on the case showing comparisons with other mangrove forests. Tangible products for the work included the writing of a book (Textbook, research book, or popular book?), the production of GIS software for biocomplexity research, and the publication of a truly jointpaper in Science or Nature.
