Shopping in Belize City - Where to look for things you need
Ice Cream - Absolutely the best place is Scoops. It is within easy walking distance of the swing bridge on the north side of the river. Go N on Queens Street (ends at the bridge) til the end, and turn right on . The ice cream is home made. Try a mango or crabboo milkshake!

Hardware - There is an Ace Hardware south of the swing bridge. Go left after you cross the bridge and it is near the bank on that main square looking area.

Chemicals -

Liquid Nitrogen - You get this at Messers on the Central American Highway near the bridge... all taxi drivers know where it is. But getting it is tricky. The gas comes by truck from Guatemala City and Coca Cola uses almost all of it. So call ahead or email philking@btl.net. The phone (I think) is 011-501-2225327, but that might have changed. I will try to update this as I can. Call early and often. Make sure that the Station Manager and Pauline both know that you need the stuff. CBC has a Dewar and the Illinois group donated a second one, but they tend to get lost in storage and transit. Be prepared to go to Messers from the airport, then take a taxi (B$300) to Pelican Beach. Give yourself an extgra day.

CO2 cylinders - Santino's Bike Shop - corner of New St and Hyde. This is about a block off Queen on the north side of the river. They sell them for use in tire repair kits but they work for IRGAs, but you need to change the filter with every cylinder or so.

General stuff - There are a number of mostly Chinese run shops on Queen Street that have pretty much anything you might need... north of the swing bridge. There are also a couple more places near Ace Hardware, including a large department store - xxx. There is another new department store on the north side, east of the swing bridge. Go past the ferry terminal and library, past the Belize Real Estate office, past the insurance company, and it is in the middle of the triangle junction.

Office Supplies - Again on Queen Street, the Angelus Press has office supplies, envelopes, really cool transparent, brightly colored electric staplers, notebooks and much more.

Souvenirs - There is a new Tourist Village down by the Ft. George lighthouse, on the north side and east of the swing bridge, near the expensive Radisson hotel. It is pretty cheesey. On your way there, you should pass a park on Fort Street, and the Belize National Handicraft Centre is right on the park. They sell the wooden chairs we have on CBC, lots of Marie Sharps, and much more stuff made by Belizians. Worth the visit.

Places to stay - There are lots of good, or at least interesting places to stay in Belize City without going to the Radisson. This list is some of the places rated as ok by project participants when travel or other plans give you a day or two in the City. Remember that during the tourist season, calling ahead is important if you actually want to find a room (the Belize country code is 501).
