Entertainment

When you're not studying or conducting experiments, you may want to enjoy some of the recreational activities available in the central Illinois area. Champaign-Urbana is located almost equal distance from Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN, and St. Louis, MO if you are looking for a more metropolitan scene, but there are still a lot of things this immediate area has to offer.

Assembly Hall (www.uofiassemblyhall.com) is located at the south end of campus, on Florida Ave. It holds a wide variety of events from U of I basketball games, to Broadway productions, to rock, country, and pop concerts. It also plays host to marching band performances, conventions, and craft shows. Tickets for big name performances are often sold by lottery drawings in attempt to more fairly distribute the better tickets.

Sporting events.
Go Fighting Illini! (www.fightingillini.cstv.com) UIUC has men's football, basketball, and baseball. There are also stellar women's basketball and women's volleyball teams! We have track, soccer, tennis, wrestling, hockey, golf, gymnastics, etc. There are also wheelchair sports, like basketball and track. Superstar marathoner, Jean Driscoll, is from the U of I. Tickets are available through the Assembly Hall.

Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (www.krannertcenter.com) has a world-renown reputation for its symphony concerts, opera, theater productions, dance programs, and international performances.

Krannert Center is not to be confused with the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkhead Pavilion (www.art.illinois.edu/galleries/kam), which is located across campus (500 E Peabody, near Sixth Street). In 1997, the museum hosted a Rodin exhibit. You can call 333-1860 for information about upcoming events.

Parks and Nature Preserves

The State of Illinois has a lot of tourist attractions (www.enjoyillinois.com) to offer, especially pertaining to one of our country’s most famous presidents, Abraham Lincoln, such as the new Lincoln museum and presidential library in Springfield (listed under museums).

Astronomy

Stargazing is one of the most inexpensive forms of entertainment around... go just out of town to the country and look up! There are several major meteor showers each year: in August, in October, and potentially spectacular ones in November and December. There are other minor showers throughout the year as well. The Milky Way is very visible...as long as the clouds cooperate!
