Professor Thomas J. Anastasio,has written a new book
on computational neuroscience entitled Tutorial on Neural Systems Modeling. The
book shows readers how to create computer models of systems of interacting neuron-like
elements (or units). The theme that unifies all of the models is that the response
properties of the units, which are compared with those of real neurons, emerge
as a consequence of the computation being performed. The link between observable
properties and useful computations provides insight into the ways in which real
neural systems may actually work. More information on the book is available at:

Professor Martin Gruebele has been awarded the Raymond
and Beverly Sackler
International Prize in Biophysics for 2008.

Emeritus Professor Govindjee, one of the first graduates
of the Biophysics Program back in 1960 (thesis advisor: Eugene I. Rabinowitch),
was awarded the University of Illinois LAS Achievement Award on October 10th.

Lauterbur passed away at his home on March 27, 2007. He shared his Nobel
Prize for the discovery of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
