Objectives
After studying this material you should be able to:
- Describe the inheritance of a mutation that results in the manifestation of a genetic disorder. Describe the roles of DNA and proteins in such a disorder.
- Describe the goals of the Human Genome Project and and the relationship of the project to the understanding of genetic diseases.
- List and explain in general terms the three questions that must be answered in an attempt to prevent or treat a genetic disorder.
- Explain in general terms the goals of and concerns about somatic gene therapy.
- Discuss the issues involved in the use of gene testing to identify a potential genetic disorder.
- Define biotechnology in its broad and narrow sense.
- Describe the general goals of biotechnology
Web resources:
These sites contain a wealth of information concerning genetics, DNA, and Biotechnology. I will include links to specific topics in the body of the outlines for this lecture and lectures 18 and 19, however I invite you to explore on your own. There might be potential net surfer projects here.

The Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (History & Mission)
Goals of the Human Genome Project:
- to construct detailed genetic and physical maps of the human genome,
- to determine the complete nucleotide sequence of human DNA,
- to localize the estimated 50,000-100,000 genes within the human genome,
- and to perform similar analyses on the genomes of several other organisms used extensively in research laboratories as model systems.
