People

Brian Allan
Principal Investigator
Brian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Entomology and School of Integrative Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

Meet the PI

Page Fredericks
Lab Manager
Page supervises the molecular lab and spearheads the development of novel assays. She is also an exceptional artist and decorates the lab in her spare time.

Research Interests

Andrew Mackay
Postdoctoral Associate
Andrew joined the lab after working for the CDC in Puerto Rico. He now runs several projects revolving around the effects of stormwater management in urban ecosystems on vector mosquito production.

Research Interests

Sharon Okanga
Postdoctoral Associate
Sharon is the project manager and ecological research postdoc for the NSF-funded project investigating the ecology of tick-borne diseases in Laikipia, Kenya.

Research Interests

Steven Huckett
Postdoctoral Associate
Steve is implementing the socio-ecological components of the NSF project and his background is in sustainable agriculture and watershed resources management aimed at the human dimensions of livelihood's improvement.

Research Interests

Graduate Students

Erin Allmann
MD/PhD Student, Medical Scholars Program & Entomology
Erin is an NSF IGERT Fellow studying the eco-epidemiology of Chagas disease, transmitted by triatomine "kissing bugs", across a human land-use gradient in Panama.

Research Interests

Allie Gardner
PhD Student, Entomology
Allie is an EPA STAR Fellow studying the effects of leaf litter inputs from native and exotic vegetation into aquatic communities on the production of vector mosquitoes. She is co-advised by Juma Muturi from the INHS.

Research Interests

Tyler Hedlund
MS Student, Entomology
Tyler is studying the invasion ecology of Lyme disease in the forest preserve system of the Chicago, IL, metropolitan area. He also performs tick identification for the Kenya project.

Research Interests

Allison Parker
PhD Student, Entomology
Allison is interested in the effects of competition in the larval environment on the capacity of adult mosquitoes to vector diseases. She is co-advised by Juma Muturi from the INHS.

Research Interests

Erin Welsh
PhD Student, Program in Ecology, Evolution & Conservation Biology
Erin is an NSF IGERT and Illinois Distinguished Fellow studying the potential effects of climate change on the ecology of ticks and tick borne-diseases in central Panama.

Research Interests

Friends of the Lab

Brett Bayles
Washington University
Brett was a PhD student in Public Health at Saint Louis University, where he studied the consequences of human perceptions of tick-borne disease risk for their avoidance and precautionary behaviors across a gradient in human land-use and tick-borne disease risk and incidence. He is now a lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis.
